Where do you rank online? Part 2

In Part 1, I stressed the importance of search engine rankings and suggested that you search on Google to find out where your company website ranks for keywords specific to your business.  Based on the level of response to Part 1, I have decided to share one of my favorite online tools for calculating search engine rankings.

With about 70% market share, Google is the undisputed king of search.   However, billions of searches are still done every month on the other major search engines, notably Yahoo!, MSN, and AOL.  Rather than search for keywords that are relevant to your brokerage on multiple search engines each month, I recommend that you use this free Search Engine Rankings Tool.  Using the “Submission Form”, type in your company website address and relevant keywords, and then click the “Check Rankings” button.  This tool then automatically pings the major search engines and provides you with a table showing where your website ranks.

Here is an example that shows where North Bay Marina, a YachtWorld.com-constructed custom website, ranks for the keywords “Glacier Bay” and “Selbyville”:

Their new website ranks number three on Google, Yahoo!, and AOL and number one on MSN, meaning that their site is listed on page one of all the major search engines for those keywords.  Interesting to note, on Google their Boats.com site ranks number one, and their YachtWorld.com site ranks number two.  This means that they hold the top three spots on Google for those keywords, or most of the valuable above-the-fold real estate.  I will discuss the concept of owning multiple positions in more detail in Part 3 of this series.
